The yesterday finally released Ubuntu 16.10 “Yakkety Yak” and the Ubuntu 16.04 based Linux Mint 18 “Sarah” can now be preinstalled on all our mini-PCs for free. While Linux Mint 18 is based on the “Long Term Support” release Ubuntu 16.04, Ubuntu 16.10 comes with updated kernel 4.8 and a preview on Unity 8. The other improvements are rather modest. Kernel 4.8 will find its way back to Ubuntu 16.04 LTS as backport kernel.
So if you value 3 years of security updates and do not want to update to a new Ubuntu release every 6 months, you should opt for Ubuntu 16.04 LTS or Linux Mint 18.
